Eagle's Bluff CC May 17th-18th 2008 The Tyler Morning Telegraph and SPORTyler pulled out all the stops as the TJGT came into town. Heavy press coverage in the week leading up to the event combined with a special 4-page insert featuring the TJGT and its top players, left no doubt in anyone¹s mind that the best junior golfers Texas has to offer were coming to town. One-hundred and eight players from 4 US States and Mexico teed it up in perfect golf weather in this nationally-ranked Golfweek event. Every player in the field was in for a surprise when they arrived to check in. Each player in the field received one dozen Nike ONE golf balls in their choice of black or platinum, a really cool pink (yes, pink!) TJGT Nike Dri-fit golf shirt, a Tyler Rose Invitational Nike Dri-fit cap, a Tyler Morning Telegraph umbrella, and a TJGT ³Play with the Best² t-shirt. Every mother in attendance received and mini-Tyler rose bush to plant when they get back home. That was only the beginning. All players and parents were treated to a wonderful hamburger or grilled chicken buffet lunch topped off with either peach cobbler or these absolutely incredible brownies before the 1:30pm shotgun start. While they were eating, TJGT CBM Director and winner of the 1980 Phoenix Open, Jeff Mitchell gave a College Bound Membership presentation followed by a College Golf Q & A. His 14 + years of D-1 head coach experience (at Stanford and Texas Tech) make him the perfect resource when it comes to answering your college golf questions. Ok, on to the action! Perfect weather + incredible golf course = great tournament action. All boys played the gold tees at just over 6,900 yards and all girls played the modified white tees about 5,700 yards.

In the Girls 16-18 Lindsey Burkhart jumped out to a 4-shot lead over Laura Deleonardis and Susannah Grunden after firing a 78. The Boys 12-15 saw Charley Graves and Taylor Moore battling it out at the top of the leader board shooting 72 and 73 respectively narrowly ahead of Jens Talbert and Kirk Williams who both shot 73. Only one shot separates Mary Cathryn Rau and Maggie Neece in the Girls 12-15. Daniela Fuentes made the trip up from The Woodlands and holds down the third spot. A well-manicured course and incredible temperatures help facilitate great pace of play with most players finishing in under 4 hours and 20 minutes....

TJGT Traditions Invitational at Texas A&M
December 03, 2007 06:08 PM PST
The TJGT Traditions Invitational The Texas Junior Golf Tour held its Traditions Invitational at Texas A & M on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1st and 2nd. The windy and overcast conditions at the difficult Traditions course challenged these elite junior golfers but it did not keep the college coaches away with a minimum of twelve college coaches being seen in attendance at this nationally ranked event. The boys were playing just over 7000 yards and the girls were playing at 6000 yards on the Nicklaus-designed course. Small greens and several ravines made the Traditions one of the season’s most challenging layouts. The highlight of the weekend could have very well been the banquet on Saturday night at the Zone Club overlooking Kyle Field. Winner of the 1981 British Open and PGA Tour Player of the Year that same year, Bill Rogers was the guest speaker and to sum up the theme of what he had to share, “there’s nothing that cannot be overcome in golf by working harder and playing better, and remember, it’s only a game.”

November 26, 2007 03:05 PM PST
Playoffs abound in rain-shortened event… Most of the time I’m sure we would all be thankful for the rain, just not on the two days that the Thanksgiving Invitational was trying to be played. For those of you that weren’t there, a little rain would have been fine but what we got was almost non-stop rain during the entire weekend. Sometimes it was heavier than others and it did actually stop a few times, but for the most part it was a very soggy weekend and because of that some groups played 18 holes, some played 9, none played 36. Over 150 players from six states and two countries teed it up in this Golfweek ranked event played at The Woodlands Resort. Figuring out who played where and how many holes might be slightly easier than trying to understand the FedEx cup points...

TJGT Bear Creek Classic Recap
September 11, 2007 05:45 AM PDT
Fountain of Youth at TJGT Bear Creek Classic 14-year old Tyler Dunlop wins boys 16-18 Division with a 2-day total of 3-under Over 100 players from 3 states teed it up in this Golfweek/Titleist ranked event played at the Bear Creek Golf Club on the East course September 8-9, 2007. Architect, Ted Robinson combined rolling North Texas terrain, strands of mature live oak trees and meandering Bear Creek to create a stunning visual landscape. This par-72 course at Bear Creek placed a premium on course management and accuracy. Narrow fairways and thick rough made it difficult to score for many of the players who played 36-holes in 90*+ temperatures over the two-day event. The boys played 6,733 yards and the girls played 5,700 yards. Although there were lots of birdies there were also lots of big numbers. The end result, lots of great golf... TJGT Houstonian Invitational Recap
August 22, 2007 09:00 PM PDT
The Texas Junior Golf Tour hosted it’s first Invitational of the 2007-2008 season August 20th and 21st at the incredible Houstonian Golf & Country Club in Richmond, TX, home of the 2006 Nationwide Tour Championship. This 1999 Reese Jones designed golf course also hosted the 2002 Southern Junior Championship. Sunday night was incredible! Besides the scrumptious double-sided buffet, the hit of the evening was the College Coach Q & A that featured LSU Men’s coach Chuck Winstead, Texas A & M’s Men’s coach JT Higgins and new Women’s coach Trelle McCombs, North Texas Men’s coach Jim Bob Jackson, and the new Houston Baptist University golf coach, Dave Shuster. Over 110 players teed it up in 90*+ temperatures and slightly overcast skies. The wind picked up both days and the players really had to think their way around the course. Both groups played collegiate yardages with the 12-18 boys playing just over 7,100 yards and the 12-18 girls playing 6,038 yards. Players and parents were treated to incredible food at the Monday night banquet. The evening was highlighted by a keynote presentation from LSU Men’s coach Chuck Winstead. He shared tons of insight and knowledge with the group that ranged from being a top 100 instructor, playing college golf with David Toms, to the 3 T’s, talent, technique, and time, and how to use them to become the best player you can be. Thanks coach for a great evening! Boys 12-18 What an exciting way to finish the first invitational of the season! We had a 4-way tie for the lead after 36-holes. First round leader Drew Evans was joined by Thomas Tatum (2008 Dallas, TX), John Darden, and Robert Mills (2008 Houston, TX) who all shot 71 giving them a two-day total of 144. It took two playoff holes, but when Robert Mills hit a 5 iron to 12-feet and made birdie, it was all over. Drew Evans took home 2nd, followed by Thomas Tatum, and John Darden. Ryan Kelley (2009 The Woodland, TX) took home 5th and tied for the low round of the tournament shooting a 3-under 69 fueled by an eagle 2 on the first hole and 4 birdies. This gave him a two-day total of 147. Girls 12-18 Heather Lott’s birdie on 16, her third of the day, gave her a second round 75 and a one-shot victory over Kyndall Ardoin whose 74 gave her a two-day total of 151 and solo second. Kelsey Welber slipped to an 82 and finished alone in third with a two-day total of 158. Three players tied for 4th, Mei Liu (2009 Austin, TX), Kayli Quniton (2012 Cypress, TX), and Chelsey Cothran (2009 Springdale, AR) shooting two-day totals of 164. Collegiate Coaches from the following Conferences attended the invitational to scout the talent: SEC, Big XII, Conference USA, Southland, Sun Belt & Mid Continent. Congratulations to all golfers who participated in this great event played on a challenging course! A special “thank you” goes out to the staff and crew at The Houstonian. The TJGT could not have picked a better place to hold the first invitational of the season. Thank you also to all of the banquet sponsors and to tour sponsors Lodge Lumber, THC Technologies, and Dominion Gas. Remember the next two events of the season will be played on September 8th and 9th at Bear Creek in DFW and Pecan Valley in San Antonio.
